Securing the Windows 7 beta

Despite the fact that security programs are often some of the toughest code to make work with a new operating system, Windows 7 already has several companies ready with products aimed at keeping it safe from attackers.

By comparison, only one antivirus firm--McAfee--had its security software commercially ready by the time Microsoft launched Vista for businesses in November 2006.

That said, it stands to reason, given that Microsoft was making far more dramatic changes to the operating system's underlying architecture in Vista than it is in Windows 7.

This time around, it is AVG, Kaspersky, and Symantec that have products that are being touted from Microsoft's site. McAfee said it will have support by the time Windows 7 launches, while Trend Micro is working to have a compatible product in the next month or so.

"It is great to see that these partners were able to have their solutions working so early in our development process," Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc said in a blog posting.

Dave Cole, a senior director of product management at Symantec, said his company decided to offer up a test version of its Norton 360 product for use with Windows 7, even though the company knows there are still a few things left to work out.

"We determined that we could run reasonably well under Windows 7," Cole said. "There are bugs that we know about, but we're comfortable enough with the effectiveness of the product that when they called us to participate we took them up on the offer."

Having the support lined up is important to Microsoft, which built an "action center" into the operating system that warns users if it detects there is no antivirus software installed. The action center then points to a page on Microsoft's Web site with links to Windows 7-compatible security software.

The page lists Kaspersky, AVG, and Norton, but adds that "Microsoft is actively working with additional security software independent software vendors (ISVs) so that security software solutions will be available for Windows 7 Beta and (the final release of) Windows 7."

As far as Windows 7's approach to security, it appears to draw heavily from the investments the company made with Windows Vista.

The most notable change is probably the fact that users now have the option to choose how often they are required to authorize changes to their system. One of the most frequent criticisms of Vista was the annoyance of the User Account Control dialog boxes that forced users to authenticate many types of changes to their systems.

Microsoft spent a fortune securing Vista, both in engineering new features as well as in testing. The software maker corralled a significant chunk of the world's penetration testers to help poke at Vista ahead of its release.

The software maker plans some penetration testing for Windows 7, but declined to say how much or whether it would be comparable to its Vista effort.

YouTube Comes To TVs Through Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii

YouTube on Thursday announced the launch of YouTube for Television, a section of the site with a new user interface designed for easier viewing on TV screens.
"[T]he TV Web site offers a dynamic, lean-back, 10-foot television viewing experience through a streamlined interface that enables you to discover, watch, and share YouTube videos on any TV screen with just a few quick clicks of your remote control," YouTube explained in a blog post. "With enlarged text and simplified navigation, it makes watching YouTube on your TV as easy and intuitive as possible."

One way YouTube is making itself more TV-friendly is by including an auto-play option that lets viewers watch related videos in sequence, without the interaction required on a computer.
Initially, YouTube on Television (www.youtube.com/tv) is available as a beta test through Sony (NYSE: SNE) PS3 and Nintendo Wii game consoles, in 22 countries and in 12 languages. Additional devices are likely to be added in the future.

YouTube began its migration from the computer in the office to the TV in the living room in June 2007 via Apple TV. Other device makers like Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Panasonic, TiVo, and Verismo soon followed Apple's lead, aided by the addition of new APIs for partners and external developers in March 2008.

YouTube's aim in providing APIs for developers is "YouTube on any screen, any time," as the company puts it.

What's less clear is whether anyone is watching YouTube on TV. TVs, after all, tend to have access to professionally produced content that people, not to mention advertisers, will pay for. Such content presumably fares well when competing for viewers against less-polished amateur videos on YouTube.

Nvidia says chip faster, smaller than Intel graphics

Nvidia on Wednesday introduced its GeForce 9400M graphics chip, a direct threat to Intel's graphics silicon.

Apple's choice of the 9400M for its refreshed MacBook line heralds a much-needed infusion of competition in the market for mobile integrated graphics--a low-cost solution that is built into Intel chipsets. To date, Intel has dominated the market, with many of the top notebook vendors defaulting to Intel graphics in low-end models and ultraportables. Apple chose Intel graphics for previous versions of the MacBook and MacBook Air.

Not this time though. Apple did its homework and CEO Steve Jobs made a point Tuesday to cite the 9400M as a reason for better performance in the new MacBooks. You can bet that other PC makers are looking closely at the 9400M.

"Intel's technology is integrated throughout Apple's product line but we didn't win this particular design," Intel commented yesterday. Its newest graphics product is based on the G45 chipset.

Nvidia in, Intel out for Apple Mac Mini?

Tom's Hardware is speculating that it's Nvidia's Ion platform that is Mini-bound.

But Nvidia's Ion chipset is tied strictly to Intel's Atom processor. It seems unlikely that Apple would demote the Core 2 Duo-based Mini to the slower Atom chip. Though anything is possible with Apple, it seems more likely that Apple will upgrade the ancient Intel GMA 950 graphics to the GeForce 9400M, sans Atom.

Apple could be planning some ultra-small Mini whose thermals can only handle a low-power chip like the Atom z540 (1.86GHz) or dual-core 330 (1.6GHz). Like I said, anything's possible at Apple, but unless there's a good reason I don't think a "new, slower" Mini hobbled by the Atom makes for happy Apple customers

Secaucus, N.J. – Panasonic will ship a pair of compact FS-series digital cameras and an entry level LS model to dealers in the spring.

Both the DMC-FS15 and FS7 feature the fourth generation of the company’s Venus Engine processor, a 2.7-

Federated Media announces layoffs, shift away from display ads

The ax has fallen at Federated Media Publishing, the online advertising company founded by former journalist John Battelle. Seven of the company's 90 employees were laid off Friday.

The layoffs, according to a company representative, were almost exclusively on the display-advertising side of the company. Federated also creates interactive marketing campaigns, and with the display ad downturn in full effect, that's where the company has chosen to focus. Federated doesn't plan to ignore display advertising, but hope to make several hires on the marketing side.

"Given our journalistic heritage, we don't want to bury the lede: Today FM is restructuring parts of our business, and as a result, we are saying goodbye to a small number of our employees," a post by Battelle on the company blog read. "Also as a result, we are adding several positions in strategic areas where we see growth in the coming year."

In April, Federated Media raised a $50 million investment round led by Oak Venture Partners. The company serves ads on many of the Web's most popular blogs, like Boing Boing and TechCrunch, but it's had some high-profile losses over the past few years. In 2007, the company lost its display ad contract for aggregator Digg to Microsoft (though it still handles sponsorships), and tech blog network GigaOM left Federated Media for IDG last year.

Search engine majors claim to mask or delete the user-specific information like masking the IP addresses. Microsoft stores user search information for 18 months.

Google and Yahoo block the last three digits of IP addresses while Microsoft deletes the entire IP address (how nice of them). However, merely reducing the user data storage period and masking IP addresses won't help. Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, argues, "Removing the last three digits of the last octet is like taking the last digit or two off a phone number. It's the preceding digits that give you the most information."

Ford Unveils 2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang

Ford has officially unveiled the high-performance Shelby GT500 Mustang, which is set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show this month. "The new GT500 is the result of the partnership between Ford's Special Vehicle Team and Shelby Automobiles, owned by legendary race car driver Carroll Shelby," reports the Detroit News. "Both worked together to enhance the car's performance and looks."

According to Left Lane News, the speedy sports car is powered by a 5.4-liter V8 that makes 510 pound-feet of torque and 540 horsepower and is "more powerful than its predecessor by 40 horses." Despite the extra power, Ford has improved the GT500's fuel economy by 2 miles per gallon on the highway.

In addition to performance enhancements, the Mustang gets an updated, more muscular exterior and redesigned interior. "Although the Shelby is a high-end specialty car, Ford hopes that the pumped up design -- racing stripes that adorn the seats -- and performance help show off the company's commitment to high performance and quality," reports the Associated Press.

Jalopnik describes the interior enhancements: "The perforated metal dash insert takes inspiration from under hood heat shields while the leather seats get sewn-in racing stripes to match the striped on the car, whatever color you pick. Satin trim replaces chrome throughout and the short throw shifter is topped off with beefy cue ball sporting molded-in racing stripes. ... In all it's a much nicer work environment and we can't wait until we replace that silly ‘new car smell' with ‘burnt rubber.'" The Detroit News describes interior updates as "quite noticeable" and notes that they include interior lighting that can be adjusted to 125 colors.

Ford hasn't announced prices for the new Shelby GT500, but The Examiner speculates, "[T]he '09 GT500 lists for more than $45,220 and one shouldn't expect the 2010 to be priced lower."

Mac web share nears 10% in December

Net Applications' December results show Mac OS X surging from just under 8.9 percent in November to the new 9.6 percent mark for the tens of thousands of sites monitored by the web tracking firm.

The figure is an all-time high for Apple and a significant jump from the same period a year before, when the Mac maker held 7.3 percent.

Its iPhone also made significant inroads and claimed 0.44 percent versus 0.37 percent the previous month, and just 0.12 percent in December 2007. The handset still claims the title of the most popular non-desktop operating system and now has more than half the market share of Linux.

Apple's success during the holiday month, as with the month before, once again comes directly at Microsoft's expense. December represented the second month in a row where Windows had less than 90 percent and dropped nearly a full point to 88.7 percent; both Apple's computers and cellphones were responsible for much of the erosion of Windows' share.

Net Applications does caution that December can potentially skew the results. As more people are staying at home or are on vacation, the researchers note, users are more likely to be running Macs and iPhones than the Windows PCs that still rule the business world.

Microsoft Fixes Zune Leap Year Freak Out

The worldwide freezing of Microsoft's 30GB Zune media player, caused by a software bug unprepared for the 2008 leap year, has been fixed, Microsoft says.

On New Year’s Eve, reports began flooding across the Internet that Microsoft’s Zune media player was experiencing a worldwide meltdown, leaving Zune owners across the globe angry and confused. The glitch, caused by software that did not account for the extra day in the 2008 leap year, affected only the 30GB Zune models released in mid-November, 2006.

By the middle of the day, Microsoft had responded to the issue, posting an entry on the Zune FAQ Web page asking users to disconnect their Zune from USB and AC power sources, allow the battery to drain, wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 and then reconnect the media player.

“You can go back to using your Zune!” the posting exclaimed. But some owners couldn’t. As it turns out, Microsoft had to update the post with a note on DRM (digital rights managed) content:

“Most likely, rights-managed content will not be affected by this issue,” the posting read. “However, it's a good idea to sync your Zune with your computer once the freeze has been resolved, just to make sure your usage rights are up to date.”

Microsoft also attempted to disused those who turned to Internet forums to resolve the issue, telling Zune owners that advice regarding battery removal in order to reset the device was “a bad idea” and doing so would will void the warranty.

According to posted reports on various Zune forums, the devices began freezing after the startup status bar reached 100 percent. A message from Microsoft addressing the issue was slow in coming, prompting a slew of angry messages on forums across the Web.

Carbon Dioxide (No S.U.V.’s) Detected on Distant Planet

Astronomers testing techniques to search for extraterrestrial life have detected carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet 63 light-years away.

This carbon dioxide, though, is certainly not coming from plants or automobiles. The planet, HD 189733b, is far too big (about the mass of the Jupiter) and too hot (1,700 degrees Fahrenheit) for any possibility of life.

“It’s really a proof of concept of using CO2 as a biomarker,” said Mark R. Swain, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who led the team that made the discovery.

The findings will appear in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

This year, astronomers including Dr. Swain’s group reported finding water vapor and methane swirling around HD 189733b. And in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature, a different group of astronomers, led by Carl J. Grillmair of the California Institute of Technology, now report that they, too, have detected water around the same planet, using a technique more precise than that used in earlier research.

As seen from Earth, HD 189733b passes directly in front of and behind its parent star as it orbits. Taking advantage of those eclipses, Dr. Swain’s group used the Hubble Space Telescope to compare the near-infrared light from the star alone (when the planet was hidden behind it) with the combined light from both.

The difference between the two spectrums revealed the light emitted from the planet, and the mix of colors in the planet’s light contained the telltale signs of carbon dioxide at concentrations of between one part per million and one part per 10 million, compared with Earth at about 385 parts per million.

Even that much carbon dioxide was a bit of a surprise, because the simplest chemistry equations predicted that carbon would prefer to form carbon monoxide or methane molecules. One possibility is that the intense ultraviolet radiation from the star, just three million miles away, is spurring chemical reactions to produce the observed carbon dioxide.

“The theorists will have no problem explaining it,” said L. Drake Deming, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and a member of Dr. Swain’s team.

Meanwhile, the detection of water by Dr. Grillmair’s team, using a similar technique but with longer-wavelength infrared emissions detected by the Spitzer Space Telescope, confirms what had been expected: hydrogen and oxygen are two of the most common elements in the universe, and they readily combine into water.

“This result basically confirms what the theoreticians have been saying for a number of years,” Dr. Grillmair said. “There should be a huge amount of water in these atmospheres, and it looks like there is.”

Shuttle makes pit stop in Texas on way to Florida

BIGGS ARMY AIRFIELD, Texas (AP) — The space shuttle Endeavour is making a pit stop in Texas on its way home to Cape Canaveral, Fla.

A jumbo jet with the shuttle riding piggyback left Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Wednesday morning. The aircraft is scheduled to stay overnight at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth and then leave Thursday at sunrise.

The shuttle, depending on weather, will arrive at Kennedy Space Center in Florida either Thursday or Friday.

Endeavour was supposed to leave California on Sunday, but a technical delay and bad weather postponed the trip.

The shuttle landed in California on Nov. 30 because storms hit the main Florida landing site. The cross-country ferry costs more than $1.8 million

White House Opposes FCC Free Wireless Internet Plan

WASHINGTON – Bush administration officials are trying to put the brakes on the Federal Communications Commission's plan to encourage a free, national wireless Internet plan, which the agency could approve next week.

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez sent a letter to the agency's Republican chairman Wednesday afternoon expressing the administration's displeasure with the idea.

"The administration believes that the (airwaves) should be auctioned without price or product mandate," Mr. Gutierrez wrote. "The history of FCC spectrum auctions has shown that the potential for problems increases in instances where licensing is overly prescriptive or designed around unproven business models."

Outgoing FCC Chairman Kevin Martin hopes to win approval for his plan next week, at one of the last FCC meetings he will chair.

Mr. Martin has proposed auctioning off some airwaves for a new, national wireless broadband service next year. The winner of the auction would be required to offer free wireless Internet access across the country within a few years on a portion of those airwaves.

The free, advertising-supported service wouldn't necessarily be speedy – it would be faster than dial-up, slower than most cable broadband offerings -- and would come equipped with a smut-filter to keep children 18 and younger from viewing porn and other racy fare. The winner of the auction could offer a higher-speed subscription service on the rest of the airwaves.

Mr. Martin's proposal is similar to a plan proposed by the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers-backed startup M2Z Networks. The FCC is scheduled to vote on the plan Dec. 18.

The wireless phone industry is strongly opposed to the plan and raised questions about the ability of any new wireless provider to raise enough capital to build out a new national wireless network. Free speech advocates, meanwhile, have raised concerns about the smut-filter.

Mr. Martin says the plan could result in a new competitor in the wireless broadband market and could help solve broad concerns about the lack of affordable high-speed Internet service across the U.S. The free wireless Internet plan is one of several proposals Mr. Martin has championed in the past year to encourage the spread of high-speed Internet service.

"We're reviewing the letter and it seems very similar to what CTIA [the wireless industry association] had put forth recently. We agree that market forces should help drive competition but we also believe that providing free basic broadband to consumers is a good thing," said Robert Kenny, an FCC spokesman.

Search Anonymization: More Hot Air from Microsoft

Microsoft announced recently that it is willing to abide by European guidelines that say search engines shouldn't keep personally identifiable search data beyond six months -- as long as other search engines like Google play along too. The announcement got a lot of press, but what's the real news here? Microsoft isn't going to do anything, unless everybody else does. As with a lot of things Microsoft, especially when it comes to the search realm, the news is more marketing hot air than tangible reality.

As it stands today, Microsoft keeps sensitive search data for 18 months, twice as long as Google currently does (although Google's new 9-month rule is also a bit slippery in terms of the actual anonymity it provides). Why didn't Microsoft just agree to meet Google at 9 months, or even to meet Yahoo's 13-month limit, and then have everyone work together to get to the European's stated goal of 6 months? Because it can't. It's still a distant third in the search engine wars, even in Europe, and it can't afford to concede anything that may further erode its position. Although it currently keeps personally identifiable data twice as long as Google, it hasn't been able to leverage that fact to improve its search algorithm and make a stronger run at search leadership. It can hardly retain less data and hope for a better result.

Microsoft has made some smart moves when it comes to search, the most recent of which was last week's hiring of Yahoo search guru Qi Lu to run its Online Services Group. But it's all probably a bit too little, too late.

Made by Gameloft, Guitar Rock Tour follows the rhythm music game play method made familiar by Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Music plays, notes appear on the screen, and you have to hit them in time. The songs included with Guitar Rock Tour are covers of popular rock-and-roll tunes spanning the last few decades—everything from The Killers’ “Walk Idiot Walk” to “Smoke on the Water,” as made famous by Deep Purple.

Just like in Guitar Hero, there’s a career-style “tour” mode that puts you in an up-and-coming band, making its way through various venues spanning the world. As you play each gig successfully, you’ll unlock new songs which you can also play individually in a quick mode.

There are three difficulty levels—easy has you picking out individual notes, while medium and hard introduce more notes, chords and faster speed. Each requires you to hold the iPhone or iPod touch a different way to get the right grip; all three will tire your fingers and hands out pretty quickly. It takes a lot of dexterity to get the balance right.

The actual mechanics of the game are startlingly similar to Rock Band and Guitar Hero—if you miss a note, your guitar will make a sour note, the playing of the song will be disrupted, and the crowd will turn against you. Drop enough notes and your gig will be cancelled all together. These game play elements mercilessly imitate Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but they also make Guitar Rock Tour distinctly different from Tap Tap Revenge, which doesn’t disrupt music playback at all if you miss a note. Personally, I find this style of play more compelling and more challenging, because the audio feedback of hitting the note right—including sustained notes—adds to the challenge, and makes you feel more in control of what’s happening on the screen.

Do well and you’ll be awarded with point multiplier bonuses. You can also build “pyro power” by hitting series of notes that look like they’re on fire: When your pyro power meter is full, you flip the switch and the crowd goes wild and your points double for the duration.

Guitar Rock Tour isn’t all about the guitar, either. There’s also a drum game mode, which has you playing the same songs. Drums are very, very tough to get right; in fact, playing drums was frustrating enough to make me give up after a while, and I know it’s not just me, because others who I’ve played the game with voiced the same complaint. I think Gameloft needs to rework this somehow in future installments of this game to make it a little more forgiving, especially on easy mode.

The more successful you are, the more awards and rewards you’re given—gold stars for good work, essentially. Near as I can tell, there isn’t any “unlockable” content like new guitars or costumes, as there is in Guitar Hero, for example; you have to play gigs successfully in order to unlock all the songs included with the game, though.

One of the big hooks that Tap Tap Revenge offers—besides its free price tag—is access to additional downloadable songs (in Tap Tap Revenge’s case, for free, just like the game). Downloadable songs have also been a huge draw for the console versions of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, which charge users money for additional tracks. But what you see is what you get with Guitar Rock Tour. I’d love to see downloadable content made available for this game.

I've remained steadfastly neutral on this whole iPod versus Zune thing. I use an iPhone, so it's easy for me to sit out, but before I got my iPhone, I had both a Zune and an iPod. I liked both quite a bit and still do. They both offer something the other doesn't. I won't go into details, as we've already done that today, but you should know something about your next president: He uses a Zune, at least according to reporter.

According to Clog, the blog of Philadelphia's City Paper weekly, a writer was in a gym working out when the president-elect came in for his morning work out. And the president-elect, it seems, pulled out a Zune and listened to it while reading USA Today. And yes, that writer says he's sure of what he saw. (To be fair, Obama's also been known to carry an iPod).

But still, I'm not sure how I feel about this. My first thoughts are that I'm glad we've got a tech-minded president-elect. He's one of us in that regard. But my second thoughts are, of course, why a Zune? I like the Zune. I have a Zune. I have many, many friends who work on the Zune team. I'm not saying it's a bad choice, I'm saying it's an interesting one. I wish I could ask the man himself.

Update at 6:02 p.m.: Debate over this highly controversial issue continues. Today, The Wall Street Journal cited an Obama spokesman who claims the Philadelphia reporter was wrong and that the president-elect, in fact, uses an iPod.

NEW YORK--Nokia's new N97 smartphone is cool, but it's still no iPhone

I got a chance to look at Nokia's latest smartphone, the N97, on Thursday at the company's annual Capital Markets Day here. While Nokia's marketing team wouldn't actually let me play with the phone, since it won't officially go on the market until 2009, I got a demonstration of some of the phone's features and functionality from Jukka Heiska, director of product management for the N97. A video of the phone demonstration will be posted Friday on CNET News as well as on CNET TV.

In some ways it's unfortunate that every touch-screen phone that comes out these days is compared to Apple's iPhone. But given the popularity of the iPhone, especially here in the U.S., it's difficult not to do the comparisons.

My first impression of the new N97 is that even though it has impressive specifications, like a total of 48 gigabytes of potential storage and a 5-megapixel camera and video recorder, the phone seems more like an evolution of Nokia's N-95 or N-96 smartphones rather than a ground-breaking new touch-screen device that could potentially be the next iPhone killer.

For one, the touch-screen wasn't terribly sophisticated. Icons could be dragged and dropped using a finger, but unlike the iPhone, which allows you to pinch text to magnify it or reduce it, or even the new BlackBerry Storm that allows you to double click on text or images to make them bigger, the N97 didn't offer these features.

Activision Shows New Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and More at In-game Advertising Event

In-game advertisements are an inescapable reality in today's videogames, and publishers are frequently required to showcase their lineup to advertising firms far in advance to secure these promotions. Activision did just that at yesterday's upfront with Massive Inc., which resulted in the two companies inking a deal for dynamic ad placement in 18 of the publisher's upcoming PC and Xbox 360 titles.
What's so exciting about a bunch of ads? When the games being shown to advertisers have yet to be announced, it's sort of a big deal. Several outlets -- including MTV Multiplayer and Newsweek's N'Gai Croal -- are reporting all kinds of reveals from yesterday's event, from a controller-free Tony Hawk sequel to a James Bond racing game made by Bizarre Creations. The former Project Gotham Racing developer is also said to be working on an as-of-yet unnamed racing game that the studio outlines as "Mario Kart meets Forza." Also present were the expected follow-ups to megapopular franchises, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Guitar Hero 5 -- which MTV's Patrick Klepek described as featuring "a Burger King ad to the right of the note highway."

As interesting as those game announcements would be, Activision is apparently unprepared to officially talk about them. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, a representative for the company stated that the reports surrounding these games were merely speculative. At this point, it appears to be a question of whose word to trust: N'Gai's or Activision's? With this year's holiday crunch finally winding down, we'd wager that the validity of this alleged speculation won't be up for debate much longer.

Historical Supernova's 'Echo' Arrives 400 Years Late

On Nov. 11, 1572, astronomer Tycho Brahe observed a bright "new star" — now known as a supernova — in the constellation Cassiopeia.

Brahe observed the star, which outshone even Venus in the night sky until it faded from sight in March 1574.

Most astronomers then believed that the stars were part of a fixed, unchanging dome equally far from Earth at all points. Brahe argued that the "new star" showed the heavens could change, and that each star had an individual distance.

Now, more than 400 years later, astronomers have use the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii to observe "light echoes" from the stellar blast to determine its origin and type and relate that information to what they see in the supernova remnant today.

A supernova occurs when a star dies violently, sending out an extremely bright outburst of energy.

Some of the light from the original supernova event bounces off dust particles in surrounding interstellar clouds and reaches Earth many years after the direct light passes by; in this case, 436 years ago. These reflections are called "light echoes."

In September, scientists used the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) instrument at Subaru, to break apart the light echoes of Supernova 1572 into the signatures of atoms (spectra) present when the star exploded, bearing all the information about the nature of the original blast.

"Using light echoes in supernova remnants is time-traveling in a way, in that it allows us to go back hundreds of years to observe the first light from a supernova event," said Tomonori Usuda, lead project astronomer at Subaru. "We got to relive a significant historical moment and see it as famed astronomer Tycho Brahe did hundreds of years ago. More importantly, we get to see how a supernova in our own galaxy behaves from its origin."

This same team used similar methods to uncover the origin of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A in 2007.

The results of the Subaru study, detailed in the Dec. 3 issue of the journal Nature, showed clear absorption of once-ionized silicon and absence of the hydrogen H-alpha emission in the light echoes — signatures typical of a Type Ia supernova observed at maximum brightness of its outburst.

Type Ia supernovae are generally thought to originate from white dwarf stars in a close binary system. As the gas of the companion star accumulates onto the white dwarf, the white dwarf is progressively compressed, and eventually sets off a runaway nuclear reaction inside that eventually leads to a cataclysmic supernova outburst.

These supernovae are also the primary source of heavy elements in the universe, and play an important role as cosmological distance indicators

The Subaru study found that Tycho's supernova belongs to the majority class of Normal Type Ia, and, as such, is now the first confirmed and precisely classified supernova in our galaxy.

Chicago (IL) – Netflix “Watch Instantly” movie streaming for Intel-based Mac is out of beta and now available to all Netflix subscribers who own Macs. Netflix emailed Mac subscribers earlier today to announce that the service is now open to all Mac users who wish to try it out. Watch Instantly still features only a small portion of Netflix’s library, but users are promised that they will be able to stream more than 12,000 movies and TV shows by the end of the year.

Watch Instantly is enabled on Intel-based Macs through Microsoft's Silverlight technology to deliver dynamic streams. It also allows a quick launch of videos with encoding quality that adapts in real time to the connection speed of a computer. Silverlight includes a platform- and browser-agnostic copy protection that prevents video stream ripping.

Watch Instantly is free for Netflix subscribers, but available streaming volume depends on individual subscription plans. For instance, unlimited streaming is included in plans priced at $8.99 per month and above. At this time, Watch Instantly is not supported on Apple TV, although the device seems to be a natural fit for the service. However, there is an unofficial workaround that involves a free multi-platform multimedia player called Boxee, which has been updated with Netflix support to let users access their Netflix instant queue, recommendations, browse recently added and most popular titles and access the Watch Instantly feature.

Boxee also provides streaming movies, TV shows, music and photos, as well as streaming content from websites like Hulu, Netflix, CBS, Comedy Central, Last.fm, and Flickr. The catch: Netflix support in the player does not currently work on Apple TV due to limited processing resources, but developers noted they are working on a solution. Apple TV readers should note that installing Boxee player requires hacks that circumvent Apple TV’s warranty.

Techmeme, a popular tech news-aggregator site, is bringing aboard a human editor to help its automated system locate, organize, and rank breaking news stories. Since its launch in 2005, Techmeme has relied on an algorithm to do the job, sometimes with strange results. In a post yesterday titled "Guess what? Automated news doesn't quite work," site founder Gabe Rivera gave an example of the shortcomings of automation: Techmeme's sister site WeSmirch, which links to celebrity news, last year featured stories about "Anna Nicole Smith's hospitalization after she's already been declared dead," he writes.

The human editor, better known as tech journalist Megan McCarthy, will work to improve Techmeme's ever-changing selection of headlines. "Obsolete stories will be eliminated sooner while breaking stories will be expedited," Rivera explains.

Not everyone agrees, however. TechCrunch blogger Michael Arrington calls the change a "slippery slope," adding that a human editor makes Techmeme subjective and "completely destroys" the site's "objective nature."

Rivera's reaction to the unfair-and-biased claim? Get over it. "I'd like to note here that Techmeme isn't fair because life isn't fair, and Techmeme will always be biased because humans have built Techmeme. And because news judgement, by definition, is bias," he writes.

I'm with Rivera on this one. A professional journalist steering the ship will only improve the focus, timeliness, and, yes, intelligence of Techmeme. Certainly, personal biases will come into play from time to time-we all have them-but that's true with any human-based endeavor. Personally, I'm looking forward to the new Techmeme.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Laptop, cell phone and iPod owners tired of having their devices run out of charge after a few hours have been patiently waiting for the next portable power source to arrive.

Tiny fuel cells, powered by combustible liquids or gasses, have long been touted as the eventual solution. Potentially, they could power a laptop for days between refills.

But fuel cells have perennially remained a year or two away from reaching the market as companies have worked on making them small, cheap and long-lasting, while making sure they don't overheat.

The U.S. government removed a key roadblock this year when the Department of Transportation amended its hazardous materials regulations to allow cells with methanol, butane or formic acid to be carried on airplanes. Methanol and butane are flammable, and formic acid is corrosive.

"That was one of the largest challenges to this market, to overcome that regulation issue," said Sara Bradford, an energy and power systems consultant for Frost & Sullivan.

Fuel cells, in which a tiny amount of fuel flows into a small chip to generate electricity without combustion, would allow users to skip the wall plug and simply swap out a fuel cartridge to continue listening to music or check e-mail.

Bradford thinks products are now truly a year or two away, as electronics manufacturers show more interest and fuel cell makers move beyond trade-show prototypes.

"We are closer, much closer, than even two years ago in terms of the companies' internal designs, how they've met their milestones and just the amount of testing and evaluation that's going on right now," Bradford said.

Lilliputian Systems Inc., a Wilmington, Mass., firm founded by former Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers, plans to introduce a portable fuel cell late next year for any device that can be charged via a USB port.

The cigarette-pack-size charger will use a canister of butane, the same fuel used in cigarette lighters, to juice up an iPod, BlackBerry, GPS device or digital camera, said Mouli Ramani, Lilliputian's vice president of business development.

The port was announced in a blog entry last week. The post also includes a link to a video that demonstrates the software booting on an actual iPhone. The lead developer, who writes under the pseudonym "planetbeing", says that the port has a framebuffer driver and support for serial-over-USB, but still lacks critical features such as touchscreen support, sound, baseband and WiFi support, and accelerometer drivers.

The port includes a custom bootloader that enables users to choose whether to boot Linux or the iPhone's own operating system at startup. The code is distributed under GNU's General Public License (GPL) and is available from a GitHub repository. Instructions that describe how to install it from an Ubuntu Linux computer are also available.

Because the port doesn't have full touchscreen drivers yet, the only way to interact with the system is by using a keyboard on a host system that is connected to the iPhone via USB. The port includes BusyBox, a collection of core GNU userspace utilities embedded in a single lightweight executable. It provides the ash command shell and enough basic commands to manage and interact with a mobile Linux platform.

This Boeing-SkyHook technology represents an environmentally acceptable solution for these companies’ heavy-lift short-haul challenges, and it’s the only way many projects will be able to progress economically.”

Boeing is designing and will fabricate two production prototypes of the JHL-40 at its Rotorcraft Systems facility in Ridley Park, Pa. Skyhook will own, maintain, operate and service all JHL-40 aircraft for customers worldwide. The new aircraft will enter commercial service as soon as it is certified by Transport Canada and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

'Stayin' Alive' has near-perfect rhythm to help jump-start heart

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- "Stayin' Alive" might be more true to its name than the Bee Gees ever could have guessed: At 103 beats per minute, the old disco song has almost the perfect rhythm to help jump-start a stopped heart.

In a small but intriguing study from the University of Illinois medical school, doctors and students maintained close to the ideal number of chest compressions doing CPR while listening to the catchy, sung-in-falsetto tune from the 1977 movie "Saturday Night Fever."

The American Heart Association recommends 100 chest compressions per minute, far more than most people realize, study author Dr. David Matlock of the school's Peoria, Illinois, campus said Thursday.

And while CPR can triple cardiac arrest survival rates when properly performed, many people hesitate to do it because they're not sure about keeping the proper rhythm, Matlock said.

He found that "Stayin' Alive," which has a way of getting stuck in your head anyway, can help with that.

His study involved 15 students and doctors and had two parts. First they did CPR on mannequins while listening to the song on iPods. They were asked to time chest compressions with the song's beat.

Five weeks later, they did the same drill without the music but were told to think of the song while doing compressions.

The average number of compressions the first time was 109 per minute; the second time it was 113. That's more than recommended, but Matlock said that when it comes to trying to revive a stopped heart, a few extra compressions per minute is better than too few.

"It drove them and motivated them to keep up the rate, which is the most important thing," he said.

The study showed the song helped people who already know how to do CPR, and the results were promising enough to warrant larger, more definitive studies with real patients or untrained people, Matlock said.

EPA slashes lead limit in air by 90 percent

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Environmental Protection Agency is slashing the amount of lead allowed in the nation's air by 90 percent.

EPA officials, who were under a federal court order to set a new health standard for lead by midnight Wednesday, said the new limit would better protect health, especially children's. Exposure to even low levels of lead early in life can affect learning, IQ and memory.

"Our nation's air is cleaner today than just a generation ago, and last night I built upon this progress by signing the strongest air quality standards for lead in our nation's history," Stephen Johnson, the EPA administrator, said Thursday. "Thanks to this stronger standard, EPA will protect my children from remaining sources of airborne lead."

The new limit -- 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter -- is the first update to the lead standard since 1978, when it helped phase out leaded gasoline. It is ten times lower than the current standard, which was 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter.

It is also more stringent than the level recommended in May by the agency's scientific advisers. In contrast, the Bush administration did not follow its own staff's advice or its science advisers when it set new health standards for smog and soot that were less stringent than recommended.

Environmentalists hailed the move, but said that the agency will have to boost monitoring to ensure that the standard is met.

"We commend EPA for taking a giant step in the right direction, but they need to greatly expand the lead monitoring network if they hope to enforce this standard," said Dr. Gina Solomon, a senior scientist with the Natural Resource Defense Council.

(CNN) -- Can Google make you smarter? Is the more you Yahoo, the better? A new study suggests that searching online could be beneficial for the brain.

A study at the University of California, Los Angeles, measured brain activity of older adults as they searched the Web.

"There's so much interest in exercising our minds as we age," said the researcher, Dr. Gary Small, a professor at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. "One result of this study is that these technologies are not all bad. They may be good in keeping our brains active."

To study what brains look like when people are searching the Internet, Small recruited two groups of people: one that had minimal computer experience and another that was Web savvy.

Members of the technologically advanced group had more than twice the neural activation than their less experienced counterparts while searching online. Activity occurred in the region of the brain that controls decision-making and complex reasoning, according to Small's study, which appears in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

Small said he can't pinpoint why there was more brain activity in the experienced users.

"The way I theorized is that when we are confronted with new mental challenges, we don't know how to deal with it," he said. "We don't engage neural circuits. Once we figure out a strategy, we engage those circuits. "

In the study, 24 people were divided into the two groups, who were similar in age ranging from 55 to 78 years old, sex and educational achievement. Their only difference was their technological experience.

The number of people in the study was small, "but adequate to see a difference between the groups. It was so significantly different," Small said.

Scientists trace AIDS virus origin to 100 years ago

NEW YORK (AP) -- The AIDS virus has been circulating among people for about 100 years, decades longer than scientists had thought, a new study suggests.

Genetic analysis pushes the estimated origin of HIV back to between 1884 and 1924, with a more focused estimate at 1908.

Previously, scientists had estimated the origin at around 1930. AIDS wasn't recognized formally until 1981 when it got the attention of public health officials in the United States.

The new result is "not a monumental shift, but it means the virus was circulating under our radar even longer than we knew," says Michael Worobey of the University of Arizona, an author of the new work.

The results appear in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. Researchers note that the newly calculated dates fall during the rise of cities in Africa, and they suggest urban development may have promoted HIV's initial establishment and early spread.

Scientists say HIV descended from a chimpanzee virus that jumped to humans in Africa, probably when people butchered chimps. Many individuals were probably infected that way, but so few other people caught the virus that it failed to get a lasting foothold, researchers say.

But the growth of African cities may have changed that by putting lots of people close together and promoting prostitution, Worobey suggested. "Cities are kind of ideal for a virus like HIV," providing more chances for infected people to pass the virus to others, he said.

Perhaps a person infected with the AIDS virus in a rural area went to what is now Kinshasa, Congo, "and now you've got the spark arriving in the tinderbox," Worobey said.

Key to the new work was the discovery of an HIV sample that had been taken from a woman in Kinshasa in 1960. It was only the second such sample to be found from before 1976; the other was from 1959, also from Kinshasa.

ROCHESTER, New York (AP) -- It is an elaborately crafted photographic film, extolled for its sharpness, vivid colors and archival durability. Yet die-hard fan Alex Webb is convinced the digital age soon will take his Kodachrome away.

"Part of me feels like, boy, if only I'd been born 20 years earlier," says the 56-year-old photographer, whose work has appeared in National Geographic magazine. "I wish they would keep making it forever. I still have a lot of pictures to take in my life."

Only one commercial lab in the world, Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, Kansas, still develops Kodachrome, a once ubiquitous brand that has freeze-framed the world in rich but authentic hues since it was introduced in the Great Depression.

Eastman Kodak Co. now makes the slide and motion-picture film in just one 35mm format, and production runs -- in which a master sheet nearly a mile long is cut up into more than 20,000 rolls -- fall at least a year apart.

Kodak won't say when the last one occurred nor hint at Kodachrome's prospects. Kodachrome stocks currently on sale have a 2009 expiration date. If the machines aren't fired up again, the company might just sell out the remaining supplies, and that would be the end.

"It's a low-volume product; all volumes (of color film) are down," says spokesman Chris Veronda.

For decades, Kodachrome was the standard choice for professional color photography and avant-garde filmmaking. At its peak, a reverential Paul Simon crooned "Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away" in 1973. It's the only film to have a state park named after it -- photogenic Kodachrome Basin State Park in the red-rock canyons of southern Utah.

Cecil Alexander is not a happy hybrid owner. He spent thousands on his Camry hybrid hoping for good gas mileage. But he says – it stinks!

Cecil said he’s never been able to get better than 25 miles per gallon.

“I figured out that even if I was getting 35 miles per gallon, which is what they advertised, I’d have to drive it 400,000 miles before it made monetary sense for me,” said Cecil. “I don’t think I’ll be around that long.”

Other Camry hybrid owners report better gas mileage. So Cecil is disappointed.

Alice Chastain also has a Toyota. Hers is a Prius and she loves it. She averages about 48 miles per gallon, which is better than EPA estimates.

“I needed something that would save gas,” said Alice. “I needed to save money, I needed something that would last. My single income would mean that I would have to depend on my vehicle to be there for me.”

Google and General Electric Team Up on Energy Initiatives

Google and General Electric said Wednesday that they would work together on technology and policy initiatives to promote the development of additional capacity in the electricity grid and of “smart grid” technologies to enable plug-in hybrids and to manage energy more efficiently. The companies said their goal is to make renewable energy more accessible and useful.

Google’s chief executive, Eric Schmidt, and G.E.’s chief executive, Jeffrey Immelt, alluded briefly to the partnership during a joint appearance at Google’s Zeitgeist conference, which is taking place at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.

The two executives gave few details of their planned collaboration. In an interview following their presentation, Dan Reicher, director of climate change and energy initiatives at Google.org, an operating unit of Google, said the effort was in its planning stages and did not have a set budget.

“All this talk about renewable energy will not be realized if we do not build substantial additional transmission capacity,” Mr. Reicher said.
